Sr Director of Maintenance

Position Overview

The Senior Director of Maintenance is responsible for overseeing maintenance operations across all sites, ensuring alignment with corporate standards and driving operational excellence. Reporting to the Sr Director of Maintenance and Engineering, this role leads site maintenance teams through direct collaboration with site leaders, ensures consistency in maintenance practices, and implements strategies to improve equipment reliability and efficiency. The Senior Director routinely travels to all sites to maintain a strong on-site presence, provide leadership, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operational Oversight
    • Provide leadership and support to site maintenance leaders, ensuring adherence to corporate maintenance standards, policies, and procedures.
    • Oversee maintenance operations at Germantown, Lathrop, and Walterboro, collaborating with site leaders to resolve challenges and optimize performance.
    • Drive the implementation of best practices in preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • On-Site Engagement
    • Maintain a routine presence at all sites (50-75% travel) to build relationships with site teams, monitor performance, and address site-specific needs.
    • Conduct on-site assessments to evaluate maintenance practices, identify gaps, and provide hands-on support where needed.
    • Facilitate regular meetings with site teams to align on goals, initiatives, and progress.
  • Standardization and Consistency
    • Develop and enforce consistent maintenance processes, tools, and KPIs across all sites.
    • Lead the rollout of maintenance management systems (e.g., CMMS) to improve tracking, scheduling, and reporting.
    • Establish and monitor compliance with maintenance standards, ensuring operational reliability and safety.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting
    • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as equipment uptime, maintenance costs, and preventive maintenance completion rates.
    • Provide regular performance reports to the Sr Director of Maintenance and Engineering, highlighting achievements, risks, and improvement opportunities.
    • Conduct periodic site assessments to evaluate maintenance performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Resource Optimization
    • Collaborate with procurement and site teams to ensure timely availability of critical spare parts, tools, and equipment.
    • Lead efforts to optimize resource allocation across sites, sharing expertise and best practices to improve efficiency.
    • Support major maintenance projects and service events by coordinating resources and expertise from multiple sites.
  • Leadership Development
    • Mentor and support site maintenance leaders to build leadership capacity and technical expertise.
    • Partner with the Director of Field Service Operations and Technical Training to develop and deliver training programs for maintenance teams.
    • Identify high-potential talent within site teams and create development plans to support career growth and succession planning.
  • Collaboration with Corporate Functions
    • Work closely with the Director of Indirect Procurement to align MRO purchasing strategies with maintenance priorities.
    • Partner with the Director of Environmental Compliance and Sustainability to integrate sustainability initiatives into maintenance practices.
    • Support the Capital Project Leader by aligning maintenance operations with the planning and execution of capital projects.
  • Risk Management
    • Identify and mitigate risks to equipment reliability, operational continuity, and maintenance safety.
    • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and maintenance-related standards.
    • Lead efforts to address maintenance-related incidents, ensuring effective root cause analysis and corrective actions.

    • Site Maintenance Manager (Walterboro).

    • Director of Environmental Compliance and Sustainability.
    • Capital Project Leader.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Equipment reliability metrics (e.g., Mean Time Between Failures - MTBF, Mean Time to Repair - MTTR).
  • Preventive maintenance compliance rates across all sites.
  • Maintenance cost as a percentage of replacement asset value (RAV).
  • Improvement in cross-site consistency of maintenance practices.
  • Timeliness of spare parts availability and inventory optimization.
  • Employee engagement and participation in training programs.

Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • 10-15 years of experience in maintenance or engineering management, with proven leadership across multiple sites or facilities.
    • Extensive experience in developing and implementing maintenance strategies, including preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
    • Strong background in cross-site coordination, performance monitoring, and process optimization.
    • Proven track record in managing maintenance budgets, controlling costs, and driving resource efficiency.
    • Experience working with cross-functional teams (e.g., procurement, sustainability, engineering) and managing risk and safety compliance.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional leadership, team building, and communication skills for managing diverse teams across multiple sites.
    • In-depth technical expertise in industrial maintenance, equipment systems, and CMMS software.
    • Strong project management and organizational skills to manage complex, cross-site maintenance initiatives.
    • Analytical mindset with the ability to use data to drive decision-making and continuous improvement.
    • Knowledge of sustainability and environmental compliance practices within maintenance operations.
  • Travel Requirements: Travel to manufacturing sites as needed (50-75%).
